When Dan Mothersdale took his own life in 2010, his fellow cricketers at Bawtry with Everton Cricket Club could never have imagined that they’d still be playing together 14 years later in his honour.

One of the keen cricketers still playing is Tom Haslam, Marketing Labs’ Creative Director.

Marketing Labs is sponsoring the club’s annual T20 cricket match in Dan’s honour this year. The money raised goes to Papyrus, the national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.

Dan started playing at the club in the under-9s team alongside Tom, rising through the ranks to junior and senior levels. He played 158 games and achieved a high score of 108. He was just 21 when he died.

Tom said: “ Dan was a great cricketer with huge potential. He was also a great friend to many of the lads who still play for the club. This match gives us a chance to remember him.”

Before it became an official charity match, Dan’s teammates would get together every year on Boxing Day (Dan’s birthday) for a game of cricket.

“We played in all weathers – snow, sleet, rain, and wind – until we eventually decided to move the event to the summer.

“Marketing Labs is incredibly proud to be sponsoring the match to raise awareness of young suicide. If we can help just one person in Dan’s honour, it’s worth it. It’s for a great cause!” added Tom.

The event will take place at Bawtry Cricket Club on Friday, June 28. Tom will be DJ-ing, adding cricket commentary, and making sure everyone has a good time. But he’ll be back in his whites the following day.

Suicide is the main cause of death in young people under the age of 35. Over three-quarters of young people affected are young men or boys. With appropriate early intervention and support, suicide in young people can be prevented.

If you or a young person you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, contact Papyrus by phone 0800 068 4141 or text 88247. For further support and advice, visit the website,
